Checking for a bad lifter.

Hello. Is there a way to check for a bad lifter just by taking the valve cover off and not having to remove the lifter out of the head? If so, can you please explain to me the method.

While probing under the hood i could hear a definitive tapping noise, unlike the rest of the valve train or the injector noise. This was definately a metallic tapping noise of some sort.

I am the orginal poster of the thread. I never did figure it out though. I don't think my problem was a lifter after all so i never pursued an answer any more. Would be nice to know for the future though.

That's kinda what i figured. I was thinking maybe a guy could use a screwdriver to pry down on the lifter to see if there is any give but there is just too much pressure on the rocker arms and probably wouldn't get a good ruling on the test anyway. Taking out would then require using like a paper clip to drain them and then pump them back up with oil to see if they hold or leak. When i cleaned each one of them in diesel, that's what i did but you have to be careful not to break or ruin the little spring inside. I'm pretty sure mine are good. I drained and pumped each one about 3 times just so i wouldn't doubt myself later on.

I don't think DSMS have lifters :) Im pretty sure you are thinking of something else often mistaken for lifters. Take a boroscope and look around inside the head and make sure everything is fine.

Larry, yours sounds bad? Its called keep the oil up and you shouldn't have that issue. Do the same as I posted up there ^^ if you cant find anything, but still have the tick, take the cams out / "rockerS" and figure out whats wrong. Have you even taken off the VC?

mines going bad too. i wouldnt bother with that. just replace all the "hydraulic lash adjuster" . :)
