View Full Version : Oil comsumption-good compression/leakdown

Hey everyone,

I rebuilt my motor this spring with just your basic 1g rods/2g piston combo(.5mm over) and ever since I have used oil at the rate of about 1/2 quart every 250-500 miles. In the process of trying to track it down I've done a compression check which came out at 185 on all 4 and a leakdown which showed 98-100% across the board.

The oil seems to get dark very quickly and after ~500 miles it looks like my old motor's (190K) oil did after 2000 miles. As far as smoke goes, it doesn't seem to smoke much at all. Under hard acceleration it will put out a little black gunk like most DSM's but other than that I won't see any signs of burning oil out the exhaust.

At this point I wanted to blame the turbo, it is an older b16g. It didn't give me any problems on the old motor and doesn't seem to have much shaft play and there isn't any oil that I can see coming out the intake or exhaust side. I did take the exhaust housing off to fix a stripped bolt but I dont think I damaged anything.

The only other wierd thing is that it seems to start a little hard in the mornings usually need to crank it for a good 5 seconds. Other than that is it runs great and is definately quick.

So has anyone else had good compression/leakdown and still had an oil consumption problem? Any other ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks
Jed

I am not sure about the oil loss but the not starting right away is probly a leak in the fuel system.

And by leak do you mean not allowing it to hold pressure?

It could be fuel pressure regulator is bad and its draining all the gas back to the tank, could be your ECU caps, Plugs/wires?

The oil thing is kinda wierd, I have 30k on my rebuild and it doesnt take more than 1/2 quart every 1000 miles. Not sure what to tell you on that one, your turbo could be burning oil slow enough not to see. I dont think I ever see black smoke when I accelerate, that would only be maybe because your running to rich?

Yeah the o-ring on fuel pump could be screwed up not allowing it to keep a tight seal.

When you rebuilt the motor did you change the valve seals? I had the same thing happen to me before I rebuilt my motor and the car wouldnt smoke under acceleration or cruise but every once in awhile on start up. Also, hows your antifreeze/coolant look?

I've had 2 different FPR's on it so it probably isn't that and I've been meaning to check the o-ring on the fuel pump for quite awhile. With DSMLink I can pressurise the system by leaving the fuel pump button on and then try to start it and it still takes a tad longer than it should to start. But anywho, I'm not worried about the damn starting I just want to know where the friggin oil is going! :)

I've had two different heads on it and both had new valve seals. The first one was a rebuilt one from clearwater cylinder head that was given to me. For future reference anyone thinking of using a head from them, please don't.
