Oh definetly. I just don't think 90% of people that go through music schools realize how hard you have to work and how much doesn't even apply to what you've learned in school. Different schools will have diferent styles of teaching, ect. but in the end you should learn the same thing.
If your interested in producing I'd take that $$ and first take music lessons/music theory , know an instrument backwards/forwards then work from there.
