I was wondering if this is a common problem and what causes it. We took the transmission off of my friends Talon. Its a 1992 FWD non-turbo. When we took it off we found a big hole in the bellhousing where the clutch usually is. The clutch is fine and it drove when it was in the car. Any ideas on what could chew a hole in it and not show any signs?

oh, what led me to think that this is a common problem was because when we called around for a junk tranny nearly half of them said there were holes almost exactly where ours was.

That pic is a little close to see where it is. I have only had one hole in my tranny. The pass half axel wasn't in all the way and slid out towards the end. It broke the end of the splined shaft off and that peice got cought in the front diff and popped a hole through to the clutch.

This was a new barring with only 300 miles. No fluid in the tranny is a downer.

Yes that’s what happens when the diff pin brakes. The most common thing is from spinning the one tire too long then it grabs the road and snaps the diff pin, the broken pin then slides out and tahks out the case.
