In my eyes he was in the top 5 all-time and still had a few good years in him but today announced his retirement and signed a "cenemoinial" contract with the Cowboys to be able to retire as a cowboy.

All I have to say even though I hated all the teams he played for is THANKS to Emmitt Smith for providing year of great games!

He was a good guy. Its good that he's going to retire as a Cowboy as opposed to a Cardinal.

If Barry hadn't of retired so early he would've blown that rushing record out of the water. I think anybody could've ran behind that offensive line and moose during their dynasty run. I just don't know about top 5 backs, he was alright but not the greatest...top 10 at least. It is good to see he retired as a cowboy though.

Never know, barry might have only last another year due to injury. You just never know. But Emmitt did take advantage of the big O line those years and his true ability to stay healthy was the reason he was so good. In my eyes I'd say the top 5 are Jim Brown, OJ Simpson, Walter Payton, Barry Sanders, and Emmitt Smith.
