Its doing it again! Its a stock 96 tsi awd. Im back in Duluth and it was around -10 last night. I just went out to start my car. It turns over but kind of slow. It should be enough to start the car though. The problem is that it fouls the plugs. The car will sputter and try to start but never does. Last time this happened I had to change the plugs out and it started right up. Any ideas why this keeps happening. Im thinking that the battery is going bad even though my tester says its good.

How thick is your oil and how powerful of a battery do you have?
I would guess it is the battery. DSM's don't start too bad in the cold, but not great. Throw a borderline battery into the equation, and you could definately have a problem.

With a decent battery and 5W-30 my beater DSM was good until -25 F* last year, 10W-30 and that number rises to -10 F*

Like Chris mentioned, the oils weight could be a contributing factor if it's too heavy. Just magnifies the week battery problem.

I just changed it with mobil1 10-30. Batt is a cheap walmart one that Ive killed and recharged a few times. The tester at work said it was good but who knows. Is it most likely that the crappy bat is causing the plugs to fail.

Those Wal-Mart batteries are decent for about 2 years, but killing/recharging them will deffinatly wear on them pretty quick. Take it back and get a new one, they have a 1 year replacement warranty.
Also, you really should be using 5w30 in the winter, especially when it's been as cold as it has.

Im going to get a new battery from checker and see if that helps. I know Ive asked this before but why is the spark plugs for a 2g different from the 1g. About a month ago the car fouled the plugs (some bosch platnums). I still had a box of the bpr6es left over from my 1g so I put those in. Car has ran fine since then but when I tried to get new plugs from checker they were a different number.
