91 TSi AWD
Well my check engine light is on. I pulled the code and I believe it was 12. The code pulled as
S-S-S-L-L-S-S-S-L-L-S-S-S-L-L-S-S-S
S = Short
L = Long
If I am correct this means L - S - S or 12. Correct?
Volume air flow sensor = MAS?
Thanks
Mike
Here is the vfaq explanation:
http://www.myzero.com/electrical/code.html
Your code is the same as the vfaq example meaning camshaft positioning sensor. I have never heard/done it this way though. I have only used my datalogger. What is wrong with your car though? Did the cel come on without any different symptoms? Where are you located?

I live in Maplewood.
The symptoms were as soon as the check engine light came on the car lost all power. I limped the last 2 blocks home, parked the car and started watching the Dallas game. At halftime I went out and pulled the code. The car ran fine then. I did make are horrible speaking/wine noise (like brakes) at about 2300 rpm. This noise was deffinetely coming from the MAS.
Am I reading the code incorrectly?
I think you are supposed to read the L-L-S-S-S meaning 23 like the vfaq said. I havent done it though. I have a 1g mas I am not using now and a datalogger but I live in Hopkins. The datalogger would just tell you what the code meant. If you car is at idle, does it surge really bad? That happened when my MAS connector came unconnected once. If so, it may be your MAS.

Man I wish I had a datalogger! I know where the crack postion sensor is. Where is the camshaft postioin sensor?
It is probly somewhere in the wiring on the top pass side of the valve cover. I am not sure though. I cannot find my repair manual now and I haven't had problems with mine (yet). I will look some more tomorrow for the manual. -John

They're the same thing if your car is the same as your handle. Both are combined as one on 1G's. It's hanging off the intake cam on the passenger side of the valve cover.
I've got an extra for sale if you find yours is indeed bad.

I have been looking through my manual for the last half hour. I still can't find it. I would think the camshaft sensor would be on a camshaft...but instead it is the crankshaft sensor.
Maybe I should look on the crank for the camshaft sensor!
Please let me know if you locate it.
Thanks!

Ah!!!
I have one from a 90. I wonder is the guts are the same? How it plugs into the wiring harness is different.
How much do you want for yours?

$50. Here's where it is, there is no sensor on the crank on a 91. Both are combined into this unit. In fact I think this is the pic of the my extra one.
