Does anyone know of a way to get remote start on a used car without voiding the warantee? I wanna get it for my step mom for her Bday, she said it was a bad plan cuz it will void her warantee. i was maybe thinking a dealership install?

The voiding of warranty thing is BS.I can't remember the name of the state law, but it prevents them voiding or denial of warranty unless they prove the aftermarket part was the actual cause.Anyway, if the installer does a good job, the dealer most likely won't even notice it.

if it has a immobilizer, ide be a little weary. at least the transponder type.
we get it all the time where the car wont start due to a remote start...and yes, there will be no warranty on the repair. lower end dealers will probably void the whole warranty due to it, but higher lever cars are much more leniant.
it is true that they legally cant. but you cant do shit

Voiding the warranty is a bunch of :bs: up here some dealerships send cars to places for customers to get them installed on the car per customer request. Also my mom had her remote starter put in the next day after she bought her new car and its been to the dealership for warranty work done on it.

hmmm. I called pontiac ( its a 40th aniversary grand prix gt) and they said that the wiring harness that comes stock with remote is diff then the ones without and installing them on the harness not meant for it causes problems... although i didnt talk to service techs.. no one is open for that saturday nights... it seems to be a well known fact.

Magnuson-Moss warranty act it what Eric is talking about.
If a dealer wants to make the conditions of warranty voidable by the use and installation of aftermarket equipment, they MUST offer and install said item for free of charge.
They do however reserve the right to expect a document that states that the unit is in complete working order before servicing a part of the vehicle that is related to that product. They may also ask the customer to have the unit disengaged, removed(partially or completely) or inspected by those who installed it(if not the dealer).
And Adam, yes you can do shit about it just by citing the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. I have done on many a customers behalf before.
Take this from a guy who installs remote starts and alarm for a living and deals with denied warranty claims due to them on a weekly basis.
Peace.

i am confused about this. So, if i want a T66 on my 04 EVO, i go to the dealer and say "i got this turbo for my car, can you bolt it on?" dealer says "well, putting that on will void your warranty" you can site the Magnuson-Moss warranty act and tell them that you now have to put the turbo on for free?
yeah, i know that is a little extreme...but
I know that dealers voiding a warranty for anything other than a totalled vehicle, or something real ovbious, is pure BS. But some dealers from what i have heard do it, and get away with it.

There is an extent to which this act applies and your point is valid, unfortunately I am only experienced enough with the act to defend my own customers with remote start related issues. For anything else I am as educated as any normal joe.
And yes I understand that dealers get away with, but it is only because people are uneducated of this act, and dealers prey on this as they do with other areas where they feel customers lack knowledge(such as repair prices and "necessary" repairs).
I am just saying that dealers love to blame common defects and known issues with vehicles on aftermarket electronics in order to dodge out of warranty repairs. I have been doing this for nearly four years and have seen some really weird claims from dealer techs that customers would have believed, but fortunately people with minor mechanically knowledge and those with info about the Mag-Moss act help those people at least some of the time.

If your evo is seen racing at a track, Mitsubishi will try to void your warranty. I have heard of it, its hard to judge when you look at both sides.

Back to the topic, no a remote start cant void a cars warr.
If the remote start fails, or causes and issue with the car then they can say because of this piece here, it did this to this part, there for we wont cover it.
If its installed properly, by a certified tech you shouldnt have any issues.
Get a DEI product (Viper, Avital, Sidewinder, Clifford, etc) they have life time warrs. All of best buys work has a life time gaurentee on it also.
If its a newer car, expect to pay over 100$ additional plus maybe an extra key to have it installed.
My whole shop is MECP certified, and between the 4 of us full timers we have over 30 years experiance.
