How Can You Tell What Type Of Engine It Is?

I was just wondering if someone could tell me what to look for to tell the diff. If it makes a difference the engine said 2000 on it? I was wondering because I would rebuild a 6-bolt but not a 7-bolt. I would rather buy a new 6-bolt.

To answer your question it refers to the number of bolts on the flywheel, i.e. : 6 bolt has 6 bolts on the flywheel, you can figure out the rest.

If engine is in car, look at the thermastat housing, 7bolt different then 6 bolt. I did this at at show when I was looking for the swapped 1g in 2g. Other differences too, but this is obvious one.

I have just a quick Q what is a 3-bolt my cousin was in search for one and i was clueless cuz i only kno about the 6bolt 7bolt and 4bolt rear

3 bolt rear. Run like the wind if you ever see one of these ;) 4 bolt is the only real choice for a decent 1G. The thermostat thing isn't a safe way to check a block since it can have any combination of head etc. Trust me, I found that out through experience. Just when you think you know what you bought, you get home and realize there is no front motor mount point because it is a 2G engine in your 1G. So to find out if it is a 6bolt or 7 bolt, look at the front of the timing cover where it meets the oil pan, if the oil pan remains flat at the flange all the way around that area, it is a 6 bolt. If it has a dip down it is a 7 bolt and if it has provisions for a front engine mount on the block it is a 1G seven bolt, otherwise it is 2G engine.

I am still a little confused.. My cousin wants the 3-bolt and he wants it cheaper and it looked as though the 4-bolt is more expensive but if 3 works better then 4 then why is is cheaper and harder to find? or am I just confusing myself?

4 bolt is a stronger rear end. He may want a 3bolt if he has a stock eclipse and is low on cash, but otherwise he should probably go with the 4.

Let me clarify this, "run like the wind in the other direction" from a 3 bolt. A decent driver with a 14b can destroy a 3 bolt without too much effort.
