Thanks guys I appreciate the input a lot of the same things being said here which is awesome.

Any specifics on what years and what not? Bobby mentioned early to mid 2000s Mazda 3s were rust buckets.

The 2011 year was the first model year they introduced the Sky Active engines. As for when the Ford/Mazda thing ended and they stopped being rusty POS's. not sure.

CRV is a great vehicle. But bang for your buck because they hold their value, you're probably over 100k miles.

For 15k get like a nearly new Fit or Focus?

That's partly why I suggested the Forrester. They depreciate slightly faster than the CRV, Quality is equal, better crash ratings, and I believe equal or better mpg.

The Forester is an awesome vehicle. But the one you're referencing with the great crash ratings, consumer reports top reliability, and 32 MPG is the 2014+ model year. They're not going to be in that $15000 range yet.

Probably right.

But historically have been top rated in crash ratings. And the forums note even the older models can crack 30mpg highway.

Looks like 2010 CRV with 100k miles are around the 15k mark.
Similar year Forester with 60k miles around the same price.
As for the AWD system, I'd take a subaru over honda.
But then you own a subaru...... lol

Spendy for such high miles but I found a couple base crvs with low miles for 15ish. I suppose you already have a truck for hauling, so does she need a suv? Maybe look at a impreza like AJ bought if you want awd, or just get a newer accord and some snow tires.

Forester seems like a good deal:
