After our little Confederate Flag debate in the politics forum, it started to get me thinking. I brought up how the meaning of symbols can change over time and how even car jargon like DSM does evolve the same way. How most of use use the term DSM is starting to change and its really sad to see. For 99% of the people on Mitsustyle you think of a DSM as a 90-99 Eclipse/Talon/Laser. But for a lot of new people in the Mitsu world out there they are thinking of a DSM as anything ever made at the DSM/Mitsu plant in Illinois. Or worse yet, they are calling any sporty looking Mitsu a DSM.

I know some of you are probably thinking, "who cares, they are just dumb kids." But the term DSM, when talking about a car platform, is just jargon. Just like talking about a 90s Camaro/Firebird as an F-body. Its not like DSM is in the Webster dictionary. My point being that if enough people start to use DSM to mean something else, it will eventually mean something else! So many new Mitsu owners just troll around on Facebook, where the 24 news cycle mentally rules and there is no archival of good technical info or historical info. So once enough noobs start calling everything under the sun a DSM, others start to buy into it.

I plan on keeping my Mitsus for a very long time and I will always have a soft spot for the DSM. And I'll be damned if I'm going to let people change what a DSM is. I'm so worked up about it, I even created a webpage:
http://mn3s.org/wordpress/?page_id=2071

I plan on linking this page to every FB thread I see that misuses the term DSM. I encourage others to do the same.

(end of rant)

Even though some may agree that the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders is what some of us really need, I agree with you Curt. LOL

Gotta' love the kids all over saying this stuff.. It does go with the change in the world. Everyone is getting desensitized and trained to believe they can have their cake and eat it too. Or that as long as they think something is a certain way, they're right and that's all that matters. Never mind the background, morals or basis of anything.

I once had one of the setup guys approach me while working at TEAM Industries in Bagley. I had my buddies old 1gb I would work on at home after my 12hr shifts. He asked me "What do you consider a DSM?" then proceeded to tell me my answer was wrong. According to him I was one of those "JDM type, hardcore Mitsubishi guys". He has to have at least 5-7 years on be too! Crazy. Then again he was one of the "Avengers are DSMs" type guys...LOL

BTW I won't make it to the DSM meet next week. The reason why is kind of interesting. Going to be on a work trip where we are installing a system we call 'DSM' at an American auto plant in the Kansas City area. :D

It boggles my mind a bit also. People claiming the Evos are DSMs just because they have the 4G63 engine. I try to educate those who mis-use the term because I've have seen and read comments where some have used the 'DSM' term to replace the "Evo" and everyone gets confused.

In my experiences, it is the 'newer' people that don't understand either terms. The 'older' folks at least understand that DSM= 1g/2g T/E/L rather than using DSM to reference an EVO.

haha, i like that webpage though! good link for more info!

Thanks. The one thing I've realized is that everyone wants to be a DSM these days. LOL
