Not exactly Carfax but it's free to check on salvages. It also picked up a salvage once that Carfax didn't.

I used this one while Cruze hunting, gives a basic check for $2.99:

Seems like any legit dealer these days gives a free CarFax or AutoCheck though. Of the private-party cars I saw, all either had really high miles or were salvaged. I didn't come across a single private-party car worth looking at.
