I have a question regarding ignition timing. I dialed in my 1650cc injectors and at idle everything looks good except my timing varies from 7*-17* at idle. Before dialing in my injectors I verified that my ignition base timing was at 5* using a timing light. Now, when I attempt to check timing and check the ground timing box in link, the car dies.

When I start the car with the timing grounded, the car dies as soon as the front o2 cycles. I have read that it is normal for timing to bounce around during idle but 17* seems a little high. I have also read that the car should run rough when grounding timing through link, but not die.

Has anyone experienced this issue? Thanks in advance.

Where are you seeing it bounce around?

Are you talking physically or in link?

In link

I would assume my base timing is still at 5* since I haven't touched the cas since I checked it. I just want to verify that it's still at 5* since my timing reads high on link and did some idle tuning. The problem is I can't check it because my car dies as soon as I ground timing in link.

Here is a log of the car idling. I ended the log before I grounded timing so it doesn't show the car dying. The second log in the link is the most updated one.

I'd turn my CAS one way so timing is way advanced then try grounding it.

I can't look since i'm at work right now. But depending if your idle is fluctuating timing would a little bit with it. Look at direct access and see what it looks like.

Open up your BISS a lot more and set your idle target rpm higher. It is probably relying on ignition timing too much to idle the car instead of the IAC and BISS screw. Turning off closed loop fueling might help too.

Thanks for the help guys, I will give that a shot when I get home.

Shane, are recommending doing this just so I will be able to ground my timing/check base timing? Or are you saying I should make these adjustments for good?

Thanks

So you can check base timing.

Hey guys, thanks again for your help. I raised my idle and messed around with deadtime and was able to ground timing without the car dying. Base timing was off and is now at 5*. I did some idle tuning and everything looks good for the most part. Only issue is that the rpms bounce from 950-1150 and sometimes the car almost dies. I tried adding more deadtime and lowering the mafcomp sliders and it helped a little bit but the rpms still bounce around. Deadtime is at 980 so I don't know if I should add anymore or not. Any suggestions?

I can't attach a log on here so here is a link where you can view it:
