"As a result, Hyundai and Kia will have to knock one or two miles per gallon off the vehicle stickers of most of their models. Some models will lose three or four miles per gallon. The Kia Soul, a funky-looking boxy small SUV, will lose six from its highway figure, lowering it from 34 mpg to 28 mpg."
I gotta say, I didn't know this:
"Automakers do their own mileage tests, following procedures set by the EPA, and the agency enforces accuracy by auditing about 15 percent of vehicles annually."

interesting. i wonder what kinds of tests the EPA does. i would say in any car, i'd give it a +/- 3 or 4 mpgs both highway and city. There's plenty of variables that can change a cars mpg.

I do wish they did the testing in real-world conditions to compensate for aerodynamics. I suppose there would be too many variables to take into account though.

Honda kind of had a similar thing. They got in trouble for their speedos being off and raking up mileage quicker, which would shorten warranty periods, but also make your self calculate gas mileage seem better than it really is.

I guess my cars always seem to be quite a bit lower than what is advertised, maybe not quite a bit but for sure a 3 mpgs or so. Usually lower, prolly just my driving style though.
Sucks for kia/hyundai though on this, prolly going to cost a pretty penny. I hope the EPA does this to all dealers because I doubt they are the only ones who have advertised this incorrectly. Reminds me of the lady in california who sued honda for her hybrid not getting anywhere near 45mpgs or whatever it was, I thought they settled with her for like 10k or something.
