Spacer Plate Question

Hey I recently converted my talon to awd. I know the spacer plate is different between the two but we just ground the hole open to fit the starter correctly. When we try to start the car it turns like a half of a revolution then locks the starter up. The motor spins freely by hand and I have tested the starter out and it was fine minus needed to be greased. When it turns over it is also making a grinding sound. My main question is what are the major differences in the plates that would cause this or is there something else? Thanks in advance

Locates the starter in a different spot. The awd and fwd flywheels are different I believe?

And, it's called a "Starter Plate" I think.

I don't think the start plates are any different in thickness. Like Kevin said awd/fwd flywheels are different as well as awd/fwd starters. You have to be sure have the correct flywheel/starter.

Yeap there diffrent by 1/2" in diameter. Are you using an AWD flywheel? I seen you had your gst stuff for sale so assuming you are. Brad everywhere I read said the starters are the same in 2G's could be wrong though.

I wasn't 100% on the starters but I think I've seen awd/fwd starts somewhere, maybe its a 1g. The flywheels are different for sure thought like you said.

It has an awd flywheel and fwd starter. Part numbers through napa show the same starter. We ground the hole in the starter plate to fit. The starter is right up agains the plate all the way around. Theres no way it could be in a different spot being that it mounts to the trans. Im really lost on this thing.

Starters are the same fwd and awd. I'd say go buy an awd starter plate. The opening of the starter plate helps center it. Just grinding the hole bigger is not a good idea IMO.

Agreed! Also this thread should shed a little insight on why it should be bought and not drilled.
