What a shame! I was gonna suggest starting in Alaska and then going South. Read about a guy who went all the way to the tip of South America in a Renault Dauphine. So I figure a moped would be a cinch, it would just take longer. I was even gonna volunteer to drive it down PCH between SF and LA if you wanted... :)
