In November, Medtronic bought 4500 iPads for their employees.

Today, 3 months later, they announce that they are eliminating 2,000 jobs.

Guess they have to pay for those iPads somehow, huh?

when I used to work for a big multinational, it seemed as though they'd just have layoffs every so often, no matter the financial outlook, to keep us on edge and working hard and trim the fat.

Some companies have questionable spending tactics. I just setup 30 new workstations and 2 million dollar state of the art laser molding machines within th past 6 months. Found out last week half the work is being moved to mexico. What waste of money and my time.

You got paid to put them in right? Then the waste of time doesnt really apply. :)

Of course it does. Had they done their homework he wouldn't have had to do it in the first place and they wouldn't have spent that money.

if the average salary is $60k @ medtronic (no idea) and the ipads cost an average of $500, the math works out to:

$2,250,000 worth of ipads
$120,000,000 worth of jobs

I'm not saying that you're wrong matt, but the math doesn't totally add up. ipads for everyone! :D Even if they paid 10 people $100k to deploy those 4500 ipads, the math still wouldn't be equal.

FWIW I think that the ipad has a real real use in the medical industry so they were justified buying them up for R&D purposes. Lots of doctors bring laptops into patient rooms and it is just awkward and stupid. A doctor's hand is the perfect spot for an ipad w/ the right software imho.
