I think the slight comfusion is AT&T didn't just call its 3g network 4g. What they did is the same as T-mobile and are going with HSPA+ which is an advanced version of 3g and they are calling that 4g. To use this network there has to be a special antenna in the phone or other device. So phones with the current 3g antennas in them will not be able to utilize the faster speeds on the HSPA+ side of things but as more people move to devices that can it will free up some bandwidth on the 3g side of things and actually make it a little faster.

But it's not the actual 4th generation. It's still 3g+ and not 4g.
Either way, lulz. Verizon sales++ banking on the general public not having any idea of the differences between cell infrastructure .

I have an iPhone 3GS with At&t and have not had one dropped call; the service from any of the big providers is sketchy in some areas. You really have to go to their local maps and see what coverage best suites your needs and locale.
I have friends who have Verizon and T-Mobile, there are places where I have service and they do not, and visa versa. Seriously there is no company better than any other in my opinion.
In a 100% 3G environment it really is faster than any othe provider as far as data goes, you know that commerial where the guy in the car gets the funny message faster than his friends. Well that happened to me recently at a hockey game, we all got the same 'make fun of the Green Bay Packers' forward, and I was watching it before theres every even got close to downloading the attachment.
But again I had full bars on the 3G network, if it was on the 'Edge' network it would have been close. One had Sprint and the other had Verizon. Both had Blackberry's.
I blame the magnetic pole shift.
Whatever you say Al Gore.

I work for AT&T and there is nothing I hate more then this 3g/4g talk. Then the assumption that because the iphone 4 should automatically be a 4g phone? It's all one big headache.. My view on why they want to rename the 3g network is because in comparison our 3g speeds are basically on pace or better then say for example sprints 4g. Verizon isn't much better. The LTE service is going to have a cap at 100mb, that is pretty amazing IMO.
This all is a conversation that could be argued about forever. It's just like a Ford/Chevy - Evo/Wrx etc.. everyone has their loyalty and what the consider the best. The numbers tell the tale.

I don't think it was so much directed at you as much as the general public. 4g is a loaded word just like Droid is with Verizon, people hear it and assume things.
I'm getting on the waiting list for the Verizon iPhone 4. :)
