The whole thing smells like a trap to get government control and regulation of the internet.

Gov. Mike Huckabee said:
“If we want to keep our nation’s secrets ‘SECRET,’ store them where President Obama stores his college transcripts and birth certificate.”

If people would stop pulling this kind of crap we wouldn't have to worry about it.

However, people do in fact do this stupid crap. So yes, the government probably will make a move now to attempt to control the internet due to this and we will have no one to blame except for Pvt. Manning and Julian Assange.

Do I agree with this move to control the internet. No. I really don't. I like my free movies and music just as much as anyone else. But can I see the reasons for it? Yes I can.

Welcome to the new internet that Julian Assange helped forge. He wanted to make America look bad, and he will succeed.

You really think a "private" had access to top level secret documents? A PRIVATE!!! You really think the government doesn't know by who and when those documents are accessed from government servers? You really think Prvt Manning could pull 250,000 top secret documents without proper clearance and there not be a military shit storm brought down on him before he walk out with them?

This will be their reason to push for FCC control of the internet just like 911 was used to pass the Patriot Act, which has already taken away some of your privacy and freedoms, to get more control of you. Kinda neat how when the government wants control of you or something else, all they have to do is have something major happen related to it at the "right" time. Almost like it's planned that way isn't it?

Uhm.... Yeah. Privates can be granted Top Secret clearance, especially if they are working as intel analysts like Pvt. Manning was. Soooo I don't really see your point here anymore. I was granted Secret clearance as a Pfc in the Marines, and I was just a mechanic. So this is not as far fetched as you seem to think.

Also, I'm sorry. But I have yet to see how the Patriot Act actually has affected me in any way shape or form.

You should be more scared about the new Xbox Kinect which uses real cameras that see into your living room. Cameras that Microsoft has already had talks about using to direct marekting efforts based on what marketing professionals see in your living room while you are playing the game.

My point is that this is all a little too convenient. Wouldn't you agree?

It very well could be. But again, Assange was the one who finally pulled the trigger on this. No matter how he got the information, he was the one that wanted to make our government look bad and now he is going to get his way.

Also unfortuneatley for all of us our politicians in office care more about doing what will get them re-elected versus doing what is best for America and the people. So that means that because they want their privacy to back stab each other, we will again suffer the consequences of "politics as usual"

I don't think it's an issue of our government looking bad, they've looked bad for a very long time, at least for me they have. For those who have thought that way, they now have proof they were right.

I will agree with that. Our government has been a sorry sight for many, many years. From both the presidents we have had in office as all as with the representatives that have been elected.

Really, we need to truly get rid of partisan politics, and just have people politics. Politicians focused on taking care of the people, not their associated political parties. But that is vastly off topic from this thread.
