After being out of the DSM scene for about 4 years, I bought a 91 TSI shell and spend quite a bit of time turning it into a car. The idea was to make it a street car with some power but somehow that evolved kind of a track vehicle with a functioning heater.
I built a nicely tucked in 10pt cage, freshened up the old engine from my red car that sat for 4 years and started buying parts. The shell stayed outside for 4 years and it had a fair amount of rusty parts. The lesson I learned is to never ever buy a shell. Everything got replaced and it got spendy.
The mods are a built 2.0L (ross/eagle), 1mm oversize valves, FP2 cams, Felpro Permatorque, A-1s, old school spearco FMIC, 3" piping, Tial BOV, Magnus Race SMIM, Magnus fuel rail, 2150s, twin Walbros in a full blown housing, -10an feed, -8 return. DSMLink, GT35R, tubular header from punishment racing, tial 44 and Steve Hill's 3.5 exhaust, Shep Stage 4, a quartermaster twin, and just about everything else to support it.
Shane @DB Performance tuned the car and it made 568WHP at 30psi. So decided that that was enough. It knocked quite a bit so the timing is very conservative at about 11-14 degrees on E85.
My first pass I ran a 12.4x@133, the second one was a 10.97@137, the next pass the car got out of control and the final one was a 10.56@139.75. I lifted on all the gears and had a slow .5 second 1-2 shift and kind of a choppy 2-3 shift. I got yelled at pretty bad for having expired belts and for cracking 135mph twice in a roll without a license.
So, overall I am very happy with the car. The car is out of alignment in a very bad way, one of the front Koni is blown and it needs a new driveshaft. So those are mods for next year. The pass was made on regular summer Yokohama tires. So, I will definitely will be buying slicks for next year.
Special thanks to Shane for the tune and all the time he spend perfecting it on the Dyno and to Jake Vogel for spending many endless nights helping with wiring, fabbing and engine refresh work.
