I had a nice long reply typed out. F-d up and clicked the X instead of a link.
Basically:
Some people are good at cars.
Some are good at cars and other things
Some aren't good at cars but are really good at other things and love cars.
We are all car enthusiasts, whether we do it ourselves or pay someone else to do it because we can, it doesn't really matter.
If you paid someone to build it and claim to have done it yourself, whole different ball game.

personally I prefer to build it cause I don't trust other people working on my cars. the only things I don't do is fabrication, trans rebuilds, and tuning. although I do prefer doing things myself after 2 years of tech school, working as a technician full time for the last 2.5 years and owning a talon for 2.5 years (which I got rid of at the end of last winter) I'm honestly getting kind burnt out with the whole hobby part of cars and would rather buy something thats already well put together but still couldn't pay a shop to build one for me.
the important thing is we all love cars and have fun with them

I would think its a about what you want to do. Yes its fun to build a car if you have the extra money to do so. But it is cheaper to buy one done in my mind but you should know what you are buying first. I could of build my evo 8 but I buy it with ever thing done to it already. There was 13K put in to the car and I didn't have that in the bank that the time so it was cheaper just to buy it for me.

These quotes below pretty much sum up my opinion. When I got into DSM's I had no clue, and got in WAY over my head. My car was pretty modified when I got it, so I never even got to experience the stock version of my car. I pretty much had to start the learning curve in the middle because of this. I am one that like to do things the right way, do it once and be done with it. I don't like to half-ass anything, so when my car broke, I had it towed to DB so Danny and Shane could work on it.
I did this for two reasons; 1) I was in Iraq, and physically could not work on it myself. I also wanted to come home and drive a fun car. (Running cars>Jackstand Queens) 2) Even if I was home, I had A LOT of learning to do to even know what I was doing, I didn't trust myself to do most things as much as I trusted a legitimate shop with tons of experience. It didn't hurt that I had a bunch of money to blow after a two year deployment either ;)
I have since learned a ton more about these cars than I ever thought I would, and I enjoy to work on my DSM now. Every step of the way though, if I don't know what I am doing, or have questions, I have a person with more knowledge of the situation come over to help me/show me how to do it. I have done this numerous times (Dave) and I appreciate every time someone can do this for me. Again, I only do this because with some things, I trust other (more experienced & knowledgeable) people to help me/do the work for me and show me how so I know how to do it in the future. Another thing that I have done and have no shame in doing is having my car in a shop for one thing (like getting things fabbed up) and having them do a few other things while they are at it as well. I see it as "Why the heck not?" they are already going to have the car torn apart, might as well do a couple more things while you're at it. Ya know?
I also have no access to a lot of fabrication stuff, so haven't been able to do any of that, otherwise I would definitely give that a shot.
I guess I don't see why some people get so butthurt over having a shop do work for them. If nobody did it, the shops wouldn't exist, then where would we be? lol
Cliffs:
-I trust someone more experienced to do some work more than myself, I am not a mechanic, far from it. I love cars, but it's just a hobby.
-I am always willing to learn how to do things.
Some people like to spend the money and do things right themselves, some people are very cheap and half ass their own cars but still do them their selves, some people open up their check book and let someone else build their car and some people want someone else to build their car for cheap. To all is their own and Ill keep doing things how I like them.
We are all car enthusiasts, whether we do it ourselves or pay someone else to do it because we can, doesn't it really matter.

If you are looking for someone to cup your balls and whisper in your ear you are looking at the wrong guy.
If you want someone to give you his 100% honest opinion that is me, now if I'm wrong please do tell me because I don't like to be.
I understand the car game is run by all sorts and without this type we wouldn't have this and without that type we wouldn't have that.
Luckily in our mitsu world, we all educate each other so we don't become that idiot that takes credit for others work and it seems want to better ourselves by understanding the other.
I thank everyone that has taught me something on here.

:) I kind of like this thread.
I love working on my car, and have learned a lot since owning my first DSM. I can do basically all of my own work, except when it requires a garage or multiple people. Things like a built engine I decided to loan out my soul and have DB build me something I can have confidence in, instead of me most likely messing it up. I'll eventually try and do one myself, but it will not be for my evo.
I respect people who do their own work, most people that take their car in because they wont even trouble shoot it for one minute bother me. Seems to be a burden on the shop most of the time.
Also, the reason I had to build a motor was because I messed up trying to fix mine! Lesson learned, and I don't regret it.
continue. :D
