Hey all. Used to be on the forum years ago before I got out of the DSM game but now I'm back and starting a 2G project. Basically I had these guys (horsepower headquarters) build me a motor when I was 16 and didn't know much about cars. Put about 40k on it since then with a 16g on it. Stopped driving it years ago because I was sick of the headaches. Anyway now I'm a ford technician so time to do a big build myself. I know my dsm's pretty well but would like to know any tips for a first time big build. Here's what I'm gonna run...

-Car is a 97 talon Tsi awd w/ 6 bolt
-Turbonetics 60-1, tial 38mm, equal length header, 3inch exhaust
-1600cc injectors, 255 HO maybe dual set-up, pump gas maybe E85
-272/272 cams
-TRE tranny with 40k untill I blow it up
...much more but that's the main stuff

-The block has 40k and has Ross pistons Eagle rods-will be checking everything but don't plan on replacing parts as of right now.

-Need advice on head. The head on it now (40k) has always had a bit of a lifter tick but has some goodies in it. Aslo have another semi-built head with cams in it that I don't know history on other than the block blew up. Thinkin I'll build a nice head from parts from both but open to suggestions.

-I know there's countless threads on this but with my set-up... 92 or E85

-What to tune with (thinkin dsm link) and gm or mitsu maf. Heard good and bad about both. Also what ignition. Was thinkin coil on plug with HKS module but open to suggestions. Also is there any aftermarket timing covers for 6 bolts in 2g's so you don't have to cut it for the motor mount. Or at least a better/good way of makin it fit without grinding it to shit with your accesory pullies/belts.

-Any other tips/suggestions/warnings would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Cory

What are your goals with the car?

Advice? Sell it, lol. Or at least sell that ancient-dinosaur-technology turbo.

if the block is still in great condition, leave it as it is. As for the head, I'd probably check to see if it's cammed (264s, 272s or 280s). From what I've been reading and told, stock 1g/2g heads can get to where you want for a pretty mean street car. For head work, I'd probably get/replace new valve seals, guides and possibly upgrade the valve springs/retainers...if they're stock. E85 all the way if you're thinking about getting some pretty good numbers. DSMLink will get into the 10s or faster if you are really good at driving.

What? That makes no sense?

basically, DSMLink is more than enough for a EMS.

He meant that you left out the rest of the equation. Link is a very small part of running 10's.

Why do you say thats old technology? Its an older turbo but has very little use. Its ball bearing and was like $1600 new.

Any suggestions on MAF? GM with that new translator or should I go a different route?

There's better turbos these days that spool faster/the same and make more power per lb. of boost.

The 60-1 is ancient technology and performs best at around 15psi, not DSM boost levels. The 61/GT35R compressor wheel took over for the 60-1 a long time ago, same spool with more power potential and now the Billet 62 and HTA stuff has replaced the 61/35R wheel with the same spool and even more power.
