I loved the movie, but I dont get why people say its a movie that "makes you think"?
There's not really much of a moral, and the only underlying theme is drug use.

Are you serious? I think your looking at it with too simple of a mindset.

One thing that bugged me, was how the "kick" didn't make the most sense. Seeing as the guy made the formula, so that any sense of falling or tipping would make them wake up, wouldn't the van falling into the water wake them up? And why when they van was tumbling through the air, didnt the wake up? The "kick" when the van was falling, was earlier than expected as well, so wouldn't the sedative still be affecting them, thus, not allowing them to wake up?
wasn't the sedative made for them so they wouldn't wake up on a certain kick. i remember the guy, who was making the sedative, testing it on them so they would be in a deep sleep without feeling the kick. supposedly at the end, it was made for them not to wake up during the kick because they were supposed to fall into the water, the water=kick, so they could get out free of the people trying to chase them. ...I've only seen the movie once. there's my answer.

if you pay attention, they miss the "first kick" which is when the van is falling. That's why they have to use the 2nd kick, when the van hits the water.

Finally saw this on Saturday. Plot was decent but the movie was not as mind-blowing as others made it out to be. Fairly well executed but I didn't get how they could have multiple 'kicks' going off at different times and still be alright to get out.
The whole dream w/in a dream thing is hard pill for me to swallow. I work a ton with virtual machine infrastructure and its setup so you cannot do such things as it really doesn't make any sense. I understand going into people's dreams, that idea is cool, but the multiple layers....ehhh.
The movie kinda had a matrix feel to it but with none of the awesomeness, save for the special effects and super deep bass kicks. When Neo slammed down that payphone and rage against the machine started playing I fuking jumped out of my seat, mind blown! Not so much with Inception.
Also someone wondered why there was no questioning of the morality of it. IIRC they did say it was illegal, these guys were just bad-asses :)

Techie! Who said anything about virtual machine infrastructure? This is all about the human brain. You can't tell me that you've never woken up and said to yourself "I had the craziest dream..."
Can you also tell me that you've never had a dream where you woke up, and then woke up again?
Now heres something that might make you think... There are people that say that whole movie was a dream. The machines that the people hooked up to... well those don't exist. But could they exist in someone's dream? Your own dream? Who cares about morality in your own dream - its what you want it to be. Illegal by whos law? Your own? Not so much. ;)
If you watched it once, I really beg of you to watch it one more time. It does raise some interesting questions once you watch it one more time and pick up on the details - or lack there of.
Last point - In the movie they say when you are dreaming you end up in places without knowing how you got there. How did the crew end up in the country at beginning? How did they guys end up on the train? And how did they get on the plane? Think about it. ;)

Watching it a second time really makes everything more clearer. I didn't read throughout this whole thread but the top totem was not his.
