Well this goes along with the terrible month for mitsu's. Last night I go to drive my car. When I put it in gear and let the clutch off and give it any gas it makes a loud clunking/ grinding noise from the left front. After trailering it home it wouldn't even move. I took it apart and none of the splines are wore away on the axle and no shavings are in the tranny. My dad looked at it as i was pulling it off the trailer and said half the axle was spinning. So the transmission was turning but it wont turn the wheels.
Any ideas?
Tomorrow I plan on looking for a used axle just to see if it will fix it. It never did it before last night.

Center diff blew up is my guess. Do you have the transmission out yet?

No, I don't have it out. Its on a 95 n/t daily beater, I wouldn't think it would have enough power to wreck anything internally.

If the axle is spinning but the wheel is not, it's a broken cv joint.

Thats what I was thinking, but I took the boot off and it doesn't appear to be damaged. Theres a little play in it but didn't seem like it would be enough for the noise it makes

Well if you said the splines on the axle and in the spindle are good, then it can only be the axle

lol I was assuming it was a awd for some reason. My bad lol. Broken cv joint sounds right. Are the boots ripped?

Good thing an axle is a cheap fix, I hate putting money into this thing as is. And nope, no tears or anything in the boot. It was just weird taking it apart and not seeing any obvious damage
