This is the Grassroots Racing Magazines $2005 challenge for next year. The link is for this year. I would like to put together a team to build one for next year. The challenge is to build it for less than the cost of the year of the challenge ($2005 next year).
Here are the rules. (http://www.grmotorsports.com/challenge.php)
So who wants to put one together? It would be a great track car for cheap out of the challenge.

sounds like a blast you'd have to go v8 for sure. buy an old caprice gut the hell out of it and you could be faster then the last 30 people on that list. or gut a honda and turbo it.

Why not just find a old beat to shit 1st gen like blown turbo and a few other problems for a couple hundered bucks, get a cheap 16g off a JDM engine for $200, weld up your own 3" exhaust. Buy a $150 maft off the trader then get some 650's and a walbro, Home made IC sparyer mabey with like a supra sidemount, custom IC and intake pipes. then do some porting to the head and shit. do some weight reduction and turn up the boost and you got 12 sec. dsm. mabey find a cheap set of 17's with some good tires if you have some extra cash. They will cedit you for any parts you take off your car to if you sell them.
I would do it for sure. I've got plenty of spare parts that could be thrown at it, like a 14b, injectors, IC etc. I would prefer to do something other than a DSM though. Like maybe an old 510, or an old bmw or something. How about a mid engine, turbo Hayabusa powered, Geo metro? :D

how does that work if you have a bunch of extra around the shop? or if someone cuts you a good deal on some parts cuz they owed you from something else?
You have to count it torwards your budget with the fair market value of the part. So, say you use a turbo on the car. Even if you already have it, you still have to deduct the value from your budget.

Mark I thought you had dissapeared forever. I was thinking about a first gen, but I also have a RX7 that has 17's and Kumos. Bad motor but only $200.
As far as parts you have laying around you need to asses what the value would be if you bought it on ebay or some other outlet.
Whos got the garage space?

How crazy can you get? I have visions of welding up a plate to adapt a t3 or t4 turbo from a buick GN ($150 used on ebay). Injectors, MAFT, street imports FMIC ($230), weld up your own exhaust, eff the intake/filter just run a screen you get the point. Nitrous is allowed in drag racing not in the autocross.
Cage if you hit 11 second or else they score you a 12.00. Document everything. Sounds like a lot of fun.
