Before i get to the dealer story...
on saturday i went to Minnetonka orchards to pick up some pumpkins and have a good time with the family. It was a little wet in the parking lot which was dirt so there was a little mud. Well a fairly large mud puddle. But it was more like sticky mud not the wet stuff that forms a puddle. So we are ready to leave and i back into the mud to have a tid bit of fun, and letting the 02 Ford Explorer do what its supposed to do and go through mud with the 4x4 with ease. But nope Not TODAY. Back up... start to go forward and gas it a bit, and NOTHING. Just sits there spinning the rear tires like it was the ford in the video just before it flipped over.
I had suspected the 4x4 wasnt working for a while now but didnt have a way to test it. (the reason i suspected it was that i could not put it into 4x4 low using the, put it in neutral and press the button marked 4x4 low and wait for the light to come on.) but now i had my proof.
So i got the orchard to bring over their lawn tractor and it pulled me out.
So today i go to the dealer hoping that i will be able to get this covered under the extended warranty. Turns out my warranty does not cover electrical components at all... even though this is directly related to the transfer case. So the dealer calls me and says, its the 4x4 control module, its not covered and if you want us to do the service, it would cost $750 including parts. So i asked how much the part is. $350. So i say, well i will think about it and let you know next week, if all else i will probably order the part from you and install myself. I pay the diagnostic fee and leave.
So tonight i pull the truck in the garage, and look in my manual, Find out where it is. IT TOOK NO MORE THAN 5 MINUTES. Where was it? Behind the glove box in plain view, would take no more then 30 minutes from start to finish.
I look online and find the part for $160 brand new.
I understand where the markup comes from as everyone needs to keep the lights on, but 300 for LABOR!!!! Come ON. BAH.
Oh well, ill be ordering and installing myself. I love the Internet.
