I've been seeing lots of sales on Externals on Fatwallet (www.fatwallet.com). Don't know how much it'll help you out but if you care to take a look here's a link. (http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/hot-deals/external/)

WD just had a TB external hard drive for $80 I believe.

^Yeah i just found that at microcenter. I just discovered microcenter and I am going there today!
That usb to SATA will be coming in a few days.

I run a regular laptop hard-drive inside of a USB enclosure. Very cheap setup, especially if you get it from Fry's or Micro Center!

I am late to this thread, but the Fed gov gave us some 250GB western digital ones to backup our laptops with. I haven't been very good at regularly backing up my computer, but it is easy to use and I haven't heard of anyone having any issues with them
