So its been 7 months since my 91 tsi blew up, recently we got crackin on it got a fully built race head with brian crower parts springs etc and upon trying the first start it did the same thing it did when it seized up. Time to check the starter, well it tested great so we started the tear down yet again. Upon anylizing the motor we found that nearly every rod bearing was completly torn up and bad. Also found a 10 mm hex nut along with a lock washer in the motor! And from us turning it over I bent all the valves! So now its off to map to get bearings etc. We found the tranny housing was cracked also! I want to know who owned this car before me! Anyway was wondering what to do with a new motor for a break in. It will have new internals along with that head. I've heard mixed opinions on how long to break it in just lookin for suggestions! So far we have fmic tucked wiring harness, magnus mani, 680 cc precision injectors, safc and some ryymz! Just bored figured I'd throw up the progress

Dude, that tranny housing was cracked when I seen it like 2 months ago. For break in, there is definately mixed opinions but I would drive it easy with a ton of vacuum pulls for about 500 miles or so, once you get a good tune on it (Shane) then let er buck.

My vote is if you have the cash, break it in on the DYNO. If not, break it in hard. If this is going to be your DD, then you're going to end up driving it easy for the remainder of the break in period anyways. Just my $0.02

vaccuum pulls in duluth works wonders.

Dyno break-in I don't feel is worth it at all, and isn't really doing anything much different then driving it on the street. What, ya gonna load it up on ramp rates on the dyno? Go drive up a hill. Gonna change the oil often too? strain it for any particles you can find. Since it's gonna be a stock rebuild, with used parts, and just new bearings (basic, freshened motor) I'd say that's not even necessary. Put it together..go easy on it, vaccuum pulls to seat the rings, and then tune/let er buck!

Ok, I'm not trying to be a dick here, but how did you spin all the bearings and bend all the valves just by turning the engine over? Did you use assembly lube on anything? Did you use a torque wrench to make sure things are not over tight? Did you check the timing belt for proper alignment after you installed it? Sounds to me like someone else should be putting your motor together.

the motor spun fine without the timing belt on it, we reinstalled the tensioner and it went bad upon reinstall and had no idea. went to turn over and there was a growling sound from the motor in the rear by the tranny so decided it would be best to take it apart. meantime while we were turning it over it jumped a couple teeth when we went to start it...it 360 degreed by hand with no problem prior. so im paying for the new valves, and timing components and we are doing a complete rebuilt on both the tranny and motor! life sucks but then you rebuilt it!
