Specs
1gHz C3 processor
20 gig HDD
slim dvd/cd rom
256mb ram
Opus 70w power supply that regulates power/ turns on with the ignition/ auto shuts off when car is turned off

the case is small enough to fit in a single DIN slot:)

after he pays for this one wednesday im building mine with
same specs except for the...
200gig 7200 seagate hdd
and the 7" XGA touchscreen Monitor im mounting in the center vent when it gets in the mail
also, im putting my main case in the trunk and a slotload dvd player in the din most likely so noone can see the comp in dash.

mainly will be used for family guy/simpsons/southpark/movies/music and all that but can also take advantage of gps and datalogging for a little more

Its worth it just for the thousands of MP3's you can store.

for his, the total cost for building was 670 and hes buying it from me for 900, but thats because it uses all laptop parts basically (slim dvd, slim hdd, slim ram, slim everything)

my comp with the 200gig hdd will cost me about 70-100 less than his since im using a larger case, but i also spent the extra cash on the touchscreen:)

Since this will only take up one of the 2 DIN spaces in the dash, couldnt you just use a std HDD carrier, and put a cheap/HUGE std size drive in the 2nd DIN space?

I assume thats where your putting this new 200G HDD?

I was looking into doing all this as well, and that C3-Eden chipset is the only way to go!

I ended up just using my T21 Think pad, for the DSMLINK, movies and MP3's as it already has a DVD and a screen.

Also you can just use a the Blackbox USB Tranmitter to send all you sound from the laptop , ie MP3, DVD's directly over to your stock FM Stereo radio with zero wiring and hacking.

But when I get around to REALLY doing the sound, I still like the Carputer concept.

All a matter of $!

Anyway, nice work!

Yeah I'm getting a lilliput touch screen and the other stuff next pay check. I'm still designing the case, but should be about 12x8.5x3 and all plexiglass. I also have started work on the program I'm making. Complete with...

-GSP (with realtime directions via MS Voice)
-DVD/DIVX/XVID/MPEG Player
-MP3/WMA Player
-Video Recorder (for when I'm going fast) :D
-Real Time ODBII Recorder (to go along with the video)/Readout (Show you 0-60 times etc.)
-0-60 Time Database (I.E So you can see how fast that Dodge Omni GLH is sitting next you at the light).
-Rear View Camera and Front View (For the recording or going reverse)
-Internet Access via my Bluetooth Phone.
-Remote Control the stereo etc from the bluetooth phone/PDA up to 30 meters away (for bragging rights :D)
-WiFi (For wardriving and downloading new music from home network).

All of it's going to be in .net C# with DirectX (probably) doing all of the visual stuff I want to go on.

I've created the guages for the ODBII readout Program (located here) (http://www.thedoughtcom.com/guage.jpg)
And I have also created the Mitsubishi spinning logo for the main screen. (menu)

I should have the software avaliable sometime soon if anyone wants to beta test it for me with their "carputer."

A friend of mine also has something in the works that would be for remote start with a bluetooth phone and car alarm (totally encrypted and secure).

Let me know what you guys think.

Peace

there are groupbuys going on at www.mp3car.com for the lilliput screens. I picked one up for 240 the otherday (7" XGA with touchscreen) and it should be here in a day or so. once everything is finished, id post on www.mp3car.com and let some people there beta test, im sure theyd be happy to find all the problems. Im happy with MediaCar to play movies, music, gps (using destinator), radio (with d-link) along with any other programs you want.
heres a skin i made for mine the other day...
