so I got this new job a month and a half ago and we have a tow truck and we all have to tow cars every once and a while. we don't have a choice. but what I'm wondering is there any kind of trouble I can get in for towing with out a towing license?

I don't see it as much of a problem. Depending on what size vehicle you are driving, you might need a certain license but it isn't anything I would worry about getting into trouble for.

Well if it is any consolation, My parents tow a 36 foot 5th wheel camper almost every weekend without any kind of licence...

there is no such thing as a towing license. there is a class D which is the basic license everyone has can drive anything up to 26,000lbs. then there is a class B which you need to operate any single unit over 26,000lbs. Then a class A license which you need to operate any vehicle over 26,000lbs with a trailer. So If youre towing with a Flatbed your just need a class D because the flatbed cant handle enough to put you over the 26,000lbs. If your towing with a wrecker that also wont put you over the weight because they cant handle that much so youre good unless you are towing with a medium duty or heavy duty truck which I am sure youre not based on what you wrote.

EDIT: with the class A, B you also need either one of those if your truck has air brakes.
