I might be trading in my GSX for the cash for clunkers deal since my car applies (it gets under 18mpg). I have been looking at new Impalas and might be trading my GSX in since its not worth really anything. Maybe this weekend I might actually pull the trigger on it.

If its running fine, you can sell it for more than they'll give you, or better yet, keep it. Don't be dumb.

The salesman I was dealing with said they would give me $4,500 for it with the program. I dont know I just was thinking about it getting something that get better mpg and has more room. I mean I like my car but how could I pass on that trade in value. The whole idea of the motor being destroyed and the car being sent to scrap being disheartning, espically with all the work I just had done to that engine (mainly rebuilt)

I wouldn't do it, Me and so many other people are against ths cash for clunkers program sure its good for the new car buyer, but think of all the used car dealers and the salvage yards this is hurting, when you turn a car in for the program the engine&tranny has to be destroyed and i think the cars even have to be crushed. They should be encouraging recycling and buying used parts i mean what costs more to the environment making a new part or buying a used one?

no kidding. It is going to be much harder on our environment... seriously. Scrapping tons of cars, making tons of new ones. Huge impact. Liberals who contradict themselves, super. What else is new?
F-ing do it. That car is no where near worth the $4500 trade in. I am not sure that your car will qualify however. The salesman is most likely going to sell you on a car, put in the voucher request and be denied.
Looking at cars.com, a 95 eclipse mpg is: City: 21 – 22 Highway: 27 – 32.
They don't differentiate between the turbo or AWD but the combined MPG is likely over the 18 mark. No real way to prove that it only gets XXmpg now.
I am considering it but I have the perfect vehicle for it: 88 Ford F150. Will have no issue at all qualifying. Only issue is that I already have a commuter which gets 58mpg (honda insight). Considering selling many cars and getting a new civic.
Regarding the environmental issue, that is one of the reasons they implimented the program. Want to get rid of poor emmision and MPG vehicles and try and help the economy by boosting auto sales. It is expected that they may run out of funding so if he doesn't, someone else will.

We aren't talkig tons of cars. This is a short term project, only July - Nov. This is meant to get shitty cars off the road. They aren't just going to bury the cars, they are going to recycle them (metal is recyclable....).
