I'm *trying* to replace my timing belt and so far I can not get the alternator lose in order to get the belt off. I have removed the upper tension/locking bolt but the lower bolt (square to the outside of the engine) will not budge. I've got the nut off of the other side (right above the oil filter) and have tried hitting it from both sides, penetrating oil, prying on the alternator its self, and it will not even budge. My Hayes manual shows just an upper and lower bolt. Is there something else I should be doing? Well its late, I'm pissed so I'll try more tomorrow. Thanks

Oh yeah, its a 92 w/a 6 bolt

There are 3 bolts...the lower pivot bolt, the upper tightning bolt, and the upper bolt that holds it in place.

Yeah, the upper two. One bolt tightens the tension facing front/back and the bracket bolt that faces sids/side. crap, that mutha is stuck.

if you need more leverage take out the driverside Fan that way you have more room to work.


Then just either do the "2 wrench" Method for extra torque or see about putting on a Socket Wrench and then buy a pipe or something to extend the handle for added leverage.

I don't know, sounds like to me that nothing good can come from this. Attempting a TB and stuck at removing the alternator. Allan says he will be over in a minute to do it for you. Basically that would be jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire. :razz2:

Okay, I got it. I think it was a matter of "psyching it out" by letting it sit over night.

Luckily I'm on spring break and this is not my daily driver but if any one wants to help let me know, I live in Maple grove.

i know a lot of people try to save a few bux by doing it themselvs.. sometimes it works, but many more times it ends up costing them more than if they just had a shop do it for them...

I know that my next one i will have a shop do it most likely. or i will just build another engine and throw it in there rather than doing it all in the engine bay like last time..

Honestly it's almost as easy as taking out spark plugs. Once you do it the first time you basically will have no problems.

Hell I had Rickey's done in about 30 minutes. But that includes chit chatting for 10 minutes, jacking the car up, showing him step by step what I was doing, droping the car down, and testing it out.


But I agree with Enes for most things it's best to:

A)either have someone who's done it before show you how to do it till you feel confortable enough doing it by yourself

or

B) have a shop do it.



I know if it wasn't for Kris Ali and Jeese Gieken I wouldn't even know how to change my oil. (I'd never done it before)
