Ok, I'm an idiot and I took off the balance belt tensioner without noting on the orientation of the tensioner.

I have a 93 tsi awd with a 7 bolt. I had the tensioner mounted with the lip side down, but it was shredding the belt and making noise... I mounted it the other way and it seems to work better, but I can't find any reference saying this is the way it SHOULD go.

I seriously just want to stop taking my timing belt apart. I've been doing it like every other day. Annoying.

The lip of the balance shaft tensioner pulley should be on the out side, as the lip of the pulley on the crank is twards the block, thus making sure the belt rides in the middle. You could also look at the pulley you took off to see which side the bolt head tighten onto vs the flat surface of the front cover.

Perfect... thats what I was thinking as well, just needed a sanity check. I do have it mounted like the crank pulley, which has the lip on the outside as well.

I did look at the pulley, couldn't tell for certain, which way it had been mounted. Curses on me for going too fast.

Thanks John!
