Ok, we've all got stories like this, but here's my first one of the year.

I'm driving south/east on 94 going through the tunnel when I see a set of headlights, on full-bright, flying down the ramp from 394 and coming up on my ass.

The nutjob, who happens to be driving a gunmetal grey 2001 or so Galant LS (!!), is weaving in and out of traffic trying to go something like double the speed of the rest of us.

Coming out of the tunnel and going up the hill it's my turn to deal with him. I drop the tranny down to 3rd and punch it leaving him well behind as his tired 4 banger runs out of torque. Thought I lost him.

But no, much like your junior year prom date at the 10 year class reunion, he's back on my tail cutting into the merge lane to hit 35 South. I've got my signal on but he blocks me so I speed up and pass the car he's 'drafting' and end up on the ramp about 100 yards in front of him.

Now he's pissed. The Galant (finally) downshifts and cuts two lanes to the left side on the 94-35 South ramp just in time for him to have to stand on the brakes for the construction zone. I'm in the right lane and pass him at about 50.

Now he's more pissed. Pulls two lanes to the right (in front of a bus) and screams down the right side and passes me (for the moment). I'm content where I am, neatly following an unmarked MPD car. The car isn't a regular traffic car, I figure it's the work car for a watch commander or something. Has all the usual 'hidden' lights and antenna as well as the XBB- license plate that is on most of the unmarked MPD cars.

By now the right lane is slowing down for the Lake Street traffic so I pull over to the left lane and pass the Boy Racer going about 30 mph faster than him. Yes, he pulls over to the left and starts dogging me. The MPD car gets a little curious, pulls out, and is moving up.

This goes on until about 46th Street. I'm in the left lane, moving along with traffic, Boy Racer screams by, cuts in front, jumps back into the right lane in time for the left lane to make up a load of time. In the course of 20 blocks Boy Racer must have passed me 4 or 5 times. Every time he passes me, he passes Mr. MPD, does the heavy traffic fly by, dumps it into the right lane, and gets pissed that the left lane is actually moving faster than he is.

At Diamond Lake Road, Mr. MPD has had enough, hits his lights, and rides Boy Racers ass into the heavy construction off ramp and pins him against the jersey barriers away from traffic.

I never went above 50 the whole stretch of 35 South from 94 to Diamond Lake Road. Not a hands-on kill, but even a remote control kill (or was it assisted suicide) counts, yes?

So you're embarrassed to be driving a mitsu because this guy is a "racer boy?"

Well, it's people like you both that make me embarrassed to drive a mitsu!

...wait a sec...I drive a subaru! haha ok... RICE ON silly mitsu racers!

p.s. Street racing is dumb and illegal for a reason. I can justify doing it where there is little to no traffic, but you deserve to hit a pole if you think it's ok to put other people's lives in danger.

Not the point I was trying to make. There I was, minding my own business, going the speed limit, staying in my lane, all nice an dlegal. Then this NutJob comes along, messes with traffic, gets pissed that my steady/legal driving was putting me in front of him time and again, and gets nabbed by a cop he passed up a couple of times in a mile inside of a construction zone.

That kind of stupidity embarasses me.

Sounds to me like you were egging him on doing nothing but making a bad situation worse.

To an irrational driver tho, legal but effective driver can piss them off, and if it means them getting busted by a cop, perfect.

Which is the point. I was just putting along, all legal and cool in the 35 construction zone when this guy starts trying to push through traffic (unsuccessfully). I never cut the guy off, never changed lanes to pass him. Never drove over the speed limit in the construction zone, etc.

The kicker of course is the unmarked cop who was always within 2-3 car lenghts of me. And it's not as if the cop was driving a minivan or something. It was a Crown Vic, plenty of antennas on the trunk and roof, red/blue led bars in the back window, searchlight mounted on the A pillar, perp-cage in the back seat. Racer Boy passed me and the cop a couple of times through thick traffic.

If I was egging Racer Boy on, do you think that the cop would have pulled the new-ish Eclipse over or the 8 year old stock Galant 4 cyl?

The guy bought his own ticket. I was just there as a witness.

The Galant driver wasn't racing you. He was just trying to catch a view of someone actually dumb enough to buy the land-manatee that is the 4G Eclipse. JK ;)

The Galant (finally) downshifts

This is fail. All 8th generation Galants in the US are all automatics. So maybe he just shifted from D to 3. :P

Oh, I should add. I've had 3KGTs, DSMs, and 3G Eclipses try to race me. Do I care? No. Who gives a shit?
