View Full Version : What oil feed setup are you using, and how is it working out?

I use a BB turbo fed from the oil filter housing with the black FP inline filter/restrictor. (I don't remember off hand what size the oriface is) I have an external oil cooler from a '90, and I don't have any problems with it. I usually check and clean the fliter with some brake cleaner every time I change the oil, and I've got it set up so the feed line comes off the filter housing, into the restrictor, then straight into the turbo.

I run no BS and the oil feed off the head with a Garrett center section turbo. My last turbo lasted a long time like this and this one has been on for a while with no oil in the intake or exhaust side. If it had BS, I would goto the oil filter. If you don't have BS and your running it from the oil filter, then I would higly recommend the FP filter setup or some kind of restrictor. I had problems on my 2G with it blowning turbo seals with no BS and no restictors with an oil filter feed.

so i should get this then for my turbo..

Thanks, I can rest assured knowing someone has a similar oil feed setup as I want, and it works fine! Got one more question, where is the FP inline filter located, near the OFH or the turbo? Does your turbo use a banjo bolt for the turbo inlet?
Doesn't really matter where you put it I guess, I have a T off my filter housing for my pressure gauge and feed line, I have a npt to -4an adapter and hook the filter right on there. Then the line goes into the banjo bolt on the turbo.
If you have a fitting that goes straight down into the turbo you couldn't fit the filter pointing straight up, but I found that the banjo bolt 90* outlet was too close to the turbo and I couldn't even screw the inline filter on, so I had no choice but to place it down at the filter housing.

Not to be a jerk or anything but it seems so many people are worried about there oil pressure to there turbo, but nobody takes the time and measures there oil pressure to there turbo!

My gauge is right in the line that feeds my turbo, I'd say it's close enough.

I run my 50trim of the head , and have for years

This is an awesome question and one that troubles me a lot.
I ran my scm61 off the filter housing with BS and blew the seals, off the head without BS and it was fine.
I might try to measure pressure at the turbo and make my own restrictor.
If this is for your holset, then I might go with the black (.80 restrictor I believe).
The guy that made his own, used a .78 jet. Holsets don't like anything over 70psi i believe.

Maybe pressure at the head( w/o balance shafts) is high enough to be within Holset specs; I'll just get the FP filter/.100" restrictor and use the OFH.

Actually, I'll be doing this. Im going to but a second oil pressure gauge on my durbo feed line, after my restrictor. Im planning on making a AN fitting that has a changable restrictor (small engine jet or somthing similar) so I can fine tune the oil pressure.
The math says that to reduce pressure by 50 percent, you reduce the total area by 50 percent in the restrictor. So after the restrictor, when the line goes back to normal size, the pressure will be reduced.
The gauge is probably overkill, but should be a good learning expierience.
