Just wondering if anybody recognizes what kind of material might be used at a cutting speed of 375 ft/min and have a tool life of 5.5 minutes. Or a cutting speed of 275 and a tool life of 53 minutes.

answer: high speed steel

What is this for? I work at a machine shop as a machinist, but I guess I dont get into such detail, but I might as around.

Doesn't the tool life depend on the material being cut, the cutting tool, and feeds and speeds of course.

Yes it does. I forgot to mention the material it was cutting was stainless steel. Basically, it was a dumb question that had us to use the simple equation
n=[(lnV2)-(lnV1)]/[(lnT1)-(lnT2)]

then figure out roughly what the tool material was. The answer ended up being High Speed Steal and it was on one of my thousand pages of notes. You wouldn't find the answer anywhere else because it was basically a question of "did you look at your notes?"
