What is an applications engineer?
Ideally an applications engineer would be hired internally. Someone who has installed/dealt with our machines a lot. They work with sales, to help figure out what will need to get done to do a certain job (what modifications would need to take place), also give a quick estimate as far as how many hours the job will take to Engineer, Manufacture, and Install. That way sales can give a somewhat informed quote to the customer, while not having to bug the actual engineering department.
At least that's my perspective of what they do. Both application engineers we've had have been prior Field Service Technicians. Field Service is kind of the gateway into this company. If you've been in Field Service here, your options within the company are endless.

I'd say Project Manager would be a little more like it. Sales still usually has a good idea of what the machines do and usually come from within. But the PM's, they just manage the project. A lot of them have no clue about our machines, all they do is manage the project. I don't know if I'd call it cushy though.
