Was out autoXing today and had a b it of an incident.

This is the front turbo. For the most part this is what it's supposed to look like. Minus the clipped corners

Here's the rear turbo. See any problems?

These were upgraded turbo's. They start as stock WRX turbo's (13T) and from there the the 3000GT exhaust housing is machined to fit the WRX turbo. Then the compressor wheel is swapped out. The compressor housing is machined as well. I've also seen mention of machining the backside of the compressor wheel to make them fit in the WRX housing. (the 19T compressor wheel is used on Volvo's in some stock applications). I'm wondering if that machining was done to these, and if it made them weak and prone to doing this. Havn't heard of this happening to any other 3S guys though.

My current thought is to get a pair of 13T's rounded up and put them on. They will be a "downgrade" from what was on there, but still a big step up from stock. I wasn't getting all I could out of what was on there, so I will probably only gain power in the lower RPM, and not lose anything up top. Better for autoX.

Hopefully the motor should be ok. Might have some witness marks from the little bits of aluminum going through it, but I think it might be OK. My initial reason for thinking it was the motor that blew up, was that it was running rough, on 5 cylinders. I've had experience with that, I KNOW what it's like. I'm betting some little bits of AL where holding a valve open, as the last time I started it, it was running on all 6.

Till next time I have some good death pics to post, Happy boosting!

Wow, I don't think I've seen a compressor wheel grenade like that before.

Maybe you need a better blow off valve. ;) Good luck getting that fixed quick!

You post the most awesome carnage pics! Keep it up!

That'll buff right out though, maybe a lil duct tape and you're set! :)

Evo3 16g's?

I found a Miata to drive for the rest of the day and had a great time. The Stealth was fun for the run and 3/4 I got to do with it. Ran a 74 and a 76 with it blowing up at the end. Somewhat dissapointed in my runs with the Miata, ran 76 on all 3 runs, the last one was clean (no cones) and just .1 slower than my quickest, so pritty decent. I was thinking I would be able to get into the 75's with it, but I think my line was wrong since I normlay drive a power car. I was over 2 seconds quicker than the other two drivers that were running the same car, so I can't complain too much.

Edit:
Planning to fix with WRX 13T's since they will bolt up to what I have in there now, and only run ~$150 each. Should get me some more torque down low and make autoXing a bit more enjoyable in 2nd gear. I had 19T's, wich were modded 13T's.
