Im trying to set the thrust bearing, so i read the procedure in the haynes manual on how to check for crank shaft end play, but is that the same thing as setting the thrust bearing?
You check the end play with a dial indicator, and the thrust bearing with a feeler gauge. arent you checking the same things?? just in different ways??(I have brand new crank and rod ACL bearings..)

Setting the thrust bearing usually refers to tapping the end of the crank while the bearings are not tight yet. Tap the crank towards the clutch, then tap it away from the clutch to the proper clearance. You want the biggest clearance towards the clutch, since the crank will be pushed in when the clutch is engaged. It shouldn't be real lopsided though, I do about .001" difference.

Crank shaft end play measurement is for checking well-worn motors to see if the thrust bearing clearance is out of spec. Setting the thrust bearing alignment/clearance is like JET posted. I usually bang it back and forth a few times with a rubber mallet with the caps barely tight and then torque the caps down after hitting it from the clutch side.
