Someone did a half ass cam shootout on the Link forums. The BC 280's made more top end power than the HKS 272's, which I'd expect being a longer duration cam. Wish they would have done a BC 272 and an HKS 280 also, but the didn't.
The car was so screwed up though that it's hard to compare. You can't do a cam shootout on a car with bent valves.

I can agree with that, hense the reason I said Half Assed. But the car bent valves on first run. Everything after that was done on the same setup. I'd say everything after that first one is somewhat comparible. It really is too bad that first run was on the HKS's though. What would it take to do something like this locally to see some results with our own eyes?

A shop to donate a lot of labor, parts, and dyno time! In a test like this I'd think the cams should be brand new and all installed by the same person to minimize the variables.

can I get by with stock springs on 280 duration cams. I am planning on biulding new heads next winter but might put in cams this spring.

I would say no, it's very recommended that you upgrade the springs when using them but, I am aware of a few that use hks 280s with stock springs.

We have some BC 272's in my brothers 2.0
I have some BC 280's in my 2.3
have some old crower 272's in my buddy's 2.4
aftermarket cams are aftermarket cams, if you compare them to stock cams, the difference is huge, if you compare them to each other the difference is small.
I personally would recommend spending the money elsewhere. Too many DSMers quickly jump into UNNEEDED mods when their car is falling or about to fall apart.
Save up for a racing trans, brakes, turbo.....things that go bad. No amount of cams or tuning will help a shitty car shift, reduce blowby, or stop without shaking.

Please forgive me if you are building a V8, V6, H4, H6, or have multiple 4g63's you are building up.
believe it or not, you have a "head" on your car, your DSM does not have "heads"....a corvette has heads.
in answer to your question "what should I do" - building a head is EXPENSIVE, budget accordingoly.
If you have to do it in stages, do it in this order:
1. Valve Job
2. Mild Porting
3. Springs
4. Cams (easiest to replace)
It is hard to replace the springs when the head on the car, you need to remove the timing belt/cams, may as well save that for cams.
or just freaken save up and do it right the first time? can I get a amen anyone?

Word. That is some actual good advice for some people, go do some maintenance before upgrades in performance.

my head is ported new valves and springs but I am planning on going with a map stage 5 head or somethig compareable as next winters project. the head on my car where done buy a freind at the votec so where very inexspensive. was debating on putting cams in and din't want to settle with 272's if I can't get by without springs then will wait until next winter.
my car doesn't need brakes, has a brand new 50 trim, and new mortor with wisco forged pistons. My race tranny will be purchased by spring, the only stock things left are intake manifold ( ported ) and cams.

IF you have a built motor and a "race" tranny ~$1500-$3000, a set of $200 springs shouldn't break your bank.
you can run BC272's with stock springs, but why? you run the risk of floating the valve and ruining your motor....again, $200 should be a no brainer.
