Looks like after Wal Mart stopped carrying them, and Best Buy shoved them in the corner, Toshiba gave up.

Sony brought the Beta to battle against JVC's VHS...and lost. Acually, the Beta was released a year previous to VHS so technically the VHS was brought to battle against the Beta.
