I'm looking to upgrade my HKS 272's. Engine starts to nose over after 7500 rpm at 18-24 psi. More boost will move that nose over higher in the rpm band. But I know at that level my cams are probably the cause. Max rpm for me will be 8500 rpm.

I'm currently running Supertech single springs on the 2.4L set up by Magnus.

I'm currently looking at;

BC280's
BC288's
HKS280's
Jun Stage3's

I know I could look at FP3's/3x's and FP4's, but I don't want to pull the head for new springs at the monent.

Any thoughts, ideas, experience?

Get a bigger intake manifold.

I would try the BC280s, since they are dirt cheap and if they don't work, you can just sell them. The BC288s might cause all kinds of things to smash together at the lifts they have, unless you do some mods to the head.

I bet you would be fine running those springs on the FP3x at the lower RPM. I think FP is being pretty conservative. Those would be my first choice, followed by the BC288's. I like my Crower 415's, but I think there are better choices out there now. I am running those with Crower springs/retainers and they have been fine to 8,500.

Good point Shane, do you know if the valve guides were machined down at all?

I found my cam card for the 415's in the move, I will post it tonight.

Are you serious about the intake? I already have the Magnus 1g SMIM on it.

I don't know about the guides being cut down. I would hope that Magnus did that as part of their stage 3 job, but who knows with out taking the head off and measuring.

I talked with Brian Crower's tech dept today about the springs I have now, the said the 288's would work fine with them.

Is it a normal Magnus? I would think the normal Magnus intakes are best suited for a 2.0l with a turbo smaller than a 61mm.

Yeah, it's the normal one. I have looked into the larger plenum design for my car, but figured it would be more of an "icing on the cake" item vs. a neccessity.

If you decide to sell your 272's, let me know. Has anyone seen numbers for the 288's in a 2.4? Seems to me that they would almost be a better choice than 280's, unless there's only a negligable gain.

We have gone over this befor. If you want a sweet SMIM buy the AMS VSR race series, Shep uses it so it has to be good.
