Just looking for thoughts on this. I know that the stock head will work with the 414's and 272's. Any major things to worry about? I know Nash nuked 2 14B's with 272's. Any thought's on this issue? Run less boost (16psi?) and avoid it? Quick replies would be great.

I can't speak for the 414's (never ran them) but the HKS 264/264 & 272/272 cams work fine with stock head, gears and springs. The same rpm limit applies as it would with the stock cams (because of the stock springs). Boost is not an issue, I ran up to 24-25psi on both set of the HKS cams with no problem (22psi on my 16g).

I was just thinking that Nash killed his 14B's due to high shaft speeds by trying to run 20psi (IIRC) on the 14B with cams that flowed well. I want to keep my 14b in one piece for the time being.

Going fast is about matching parts correctly. Race cams and a dinky stock turbo don't fit this pattern. Save your money for other stuff like a bigger turbo. :banana:

Looks to me it would have fun with some help 'up top'
go for it, if it spins apart, well you need more turbo :).

I had 264's on my 16g setup. I didn't notice much of a difference. Maybe on the new turbo it will help more...

Here are some numbers from when AMS tested several cams on 1g with a 16g and all the supporting mods:


Cams Tested:

Stock Mitsubishi

Web Cams - Street Grind

HKS 264 intake 264 Exhaust

Crower - Stage 3 Grind

Jun Stage 3 Grind

Peak Horsepower and Torque Results:

Stock Mitsubishi Camshafts:

Peak HP: 309.5

Peak TRQ: 295.3

Spool up on street: quick, full boost by 3.2K RPM in 3rd gear with good power when off boost and as it's coming onto boost.


Web Cams - Street Grind:

Peak HP: 314.3

Peak TRQ: 295.3

Spool up on street: slower than stock, full boost by 3.4K RPM in 3rd gear with less power off boost than stock cams.



Crower - Stage 3 Grind

Peak HP: 322.6

Peak TRQ: 314.0

Spool up on street: much slower than stock (the worst of all the cams) with full boost hitting by 3.6-3.7K RPM and a definite loss in power off boost compared to stock cams.



Jun Stage 3 Grind

Peak HP: 323.7

Peak TRQ: 323.2

Spool up on street: Car was not driven on the street.



HKS 264 Intake 264 Exhaust

Peak HP: 323.1

Peak TRQ: 333.0

Spool up on street: As good as stock (3.2K RPM), with off boost power the same if not better than stock.



HKS 264 Intake 272 Exhaust

Peak HP: 324.2

Peak TRQ: 333.1

Spool up on street: Slightly slower than stock (3.3K RPM in 3rd gear) and a very slight loss in power in off boost conditions.



HKS 272 Intake 272 Exhaust

Peak HP: 325.2

Peak TRQ: 323.4

Spool up on street: Slower than stock, full boost by 3.4K RPM in 3rd gear with a slight loss in power in off boost conditions.




It seems that the HKS dominate with the smaller turbo, I would say with even a smaller turbo like the 14b, the hks 264/264 or 264/272 would be your best bet. This would give you a close to regular idle while still keeping a lower end powerband pretty similar, and increasing the top end power significantly. If you plan on going with a large turbo (20g and up) in the future I would suggest getting the hks 272/272 because they seem to prevail when flowing huge numbers. Not quite sure how that would work with the 14b though (rough idle). I would first suggest getting all the supporting mods so you can get the most out of your cams.

They work awesome with a 14B as well, and I love the idle.

272's all the way when it comes time for cams.
