View Full Version : A couple questions

Hey guys. I finally got a motor for my car and got it in this summer. It was a blast to drive finally! Anyway, I have a couple questions and I figured it would be best to put them all in one thread rather than whore up the board. I figured they could all be put into this subforum anyway, I appologize if this was a bad spot for it.

First off, the motor was freshed up around 16k ago so I dont really want to get a new HG and start fucking around with all that again. This spring I will need to get into it a little bit to put in my FP2's and while I am in there I want to put in my ARP's. Is there a way to put the ARP's in without having to completely take the head off? I guess what I am getting at is, is it possible to maybe losen each of the existing head bolts then take one out and put in an ARP in its place, then keep doing that until they are all ARP's? I would just rather not deal with ripping the entire top half of the car apart if I dont have to.

Second, I bought the FP2's a while back and had them in the first motor for about 50 miles before it grenaded. Thankfully, there is no problems on the cams! Anyway, as stated above I am going to put them in this spring. That year I had them I just put the stock gears on, but now I am wondering if this is ok. Are adjustable cam gears necessary or will the stockers do?

My last question involves E85 and intercooling. As I may have made known, I am looking to go "stockish appearing" with my build, particularly meaning TD05 turbo and SMIC, though I will be making hard pipes for it. I am thinking about going with the supra side mount, maybe an aftermarket one if I can score a good deal. Currently I am on a big 16g, but when that dies or I finish the rest of my setup I will be going Evo III 16g or I was toying with the idea of a bastard 20g. Anway, I know E85 is a less knock prone fuel so the supra SMIC should cool the air charge sufficiently right? I will be running probably like 16-18 lbs DD style, but come track time I will amp it up to whatever is necessary (25 lbs?). I've heard bad things about the bastard 20g, IIRC from peopel on this board. What do you guys think would be the better choice? Any idea what kind of airflow the bastard 20g is capable of? Would this IC setup be ok? If not, what about if I made a C02 IC sprayer for use at the track? And please dont just tell me to get a FMIC for the sake of having an FMIC, however I will if the supra SMIC just plain wont cut it.

Thanks all, I appreciate the guidance!

Yes, you can do this. There may be a write up on VFAQ, but the idea is pretty basic so you shouldn't need much info.

1st - Yes, that will work fine.

2nd - No, stock cam gears should be fine on those cams, not all cams though

3rd - i would go with a FMIC and give it a mist of black BBQ paint to hide it. The supra should be fine for an e16g, but bigger than that will start to be a problem. When little turbo's start working hard they put out really hot air, so a SMIC is an issue then. You could always do an air to water also, then you can hide it.

The bastard 20g flows just below a 50 trim.
If you buy a used one, make sure it works. I just grabbed my ankles to buy a new wheel. :/

Or you could use a sprayer to cool the smic, i just discovered that this bumper has nozzles to spray a sidemount, badass if you ask me.

Glad to see you have enough self control not to go too big, plus you have the E16G, fricken sweet

Sweet, thanks guys! Yeah, I definately think an IC sprayer will be in the works eventually. I need limits to work within otherwise I would be up to my nuts in a built motor and tranny etc. I decided to go for the "stock look" mostly to keep myself from going to crazy, keep costs down, and keep reliability up (hopefully). As long as it appears stockish looking to the average non-DSMer then I have achieved my goal.
