Well, I've been thinking about getting a laptop for awhile now and decided to see what you guys would suggest. I get a discount through Dell so I think I'm going to go with a Dell. This will be used for school work, pictures, home made videos, mostly entertainment stuff and school work. Any ideas on how fast of a processor I should get such as 2.0 ghz or such. How much memory will be enough? I like the idea of wireless too so some ideas in that field would be great. Who knows? Maybe later down the road when I decide to get Dsmlink, I might even use the laptop for that. How about the os? I like to try the new Vista but haven't been hearing too many things about them so if not Vista, then back to Xp of course.

Any ideas, suggestion, or comments would be great.

I would do a lot of shopping around. The Dell discounts usually aren't any better or worse than you can get with coupons. I would go at least 2.0ghz, 2gb memory and a 7200 rpm HD. The rest is pretty much frills and you can add on anything else you need. You might want to upgrade the wireless card while you are at it.

As a whole, Dell computers are junk, especially their laptops. My suggestion: find a better brand if the cash is coming out of your pocket.

My dad has a Dell and hasn't had any problems with it. Has had it for about 1.5 years now.

I bought the Inspiron E1705 last summer off of eBay and love it, haven't had a single problem with it either. Its a core duo, they came out with the core duo 2s like a month after I bought mine. :(

I agree.

I have had my Dell Inspirion 600m for about 4 years now. It has been flawless. Not sure about the current models but if I were shopping for a new one I would look into a Dell again. I am due for a new battery though, it only lasts about 40 minutes now, which isnt bad for a 4 yr old machine but it could be better.

Keep in mind their tech support is in the US again! If you ever need to use it.

I LOVE my dell and their support. In fact it's in getting warranty work done to it right now, however it's not Dell's fault it broke. I overclocked my Nvidia video card and they have problems breaking anyway.

The laptop though has been great, this is the 2nd Dell laptop I've owned and plan on getting a new one once the DX10 cards come out.

Just get the E1505 laptop, with around a 2GHz core duo 2 CPU and 1GB of RAM. If you're going to use it for gaming get the one I have (E1705) with a 7900GS and the nice screen (1900x1200) and you will NOT be sorry. Get either of those with the minimum memory and get the rest at newegg and save about 50-100 dollars. 1-2GB of RAM should be great for your needs. Try to get a 7200RPM drive too, they're worth the extra money in speed.

Oh and get the bluetooth card, there's lots of uses for having bluetooth on your laptop.
