The original SAFC is actually the 5-knob version. The single knob was called just an AFC. But yes, the first blinky-blue was much faster and easier to use than the joystick version.

Then the first blinky blue
Then the blinky blue with a joystick (S-AFC II)

I miss my 5-knob, that thing was so easy to tune on the fly. Mid-race I could adjust my mixture based on what I was seeing on my dash mounted logger....or go full-rich to piss off tailgaters ;)

There might have even been another one before the 5-knob unit that we are used to. I can across some very ancient documentation for one a few years ago.

There was a single knob AFC before the 5-knob SAFC.
