Hi,

Just recently i picked up a 1990 TSI AWD Talon in Wisconsin, stock Rebuilt engine and tranny with 22k. Due to the fact that i had crashed my Audi A4 last saturday and needed a fall back car quick. Ive only messed around with n/a cars like Rx-7s, Audis, and Chevys and know very little about eagles/eclipses besides a rumer that they blow head gaskets like crazy... other then that i know nothing about forced induction besides it makes the car faster and makes cool noises :). which means i have alots to learn...

I guess my first question is I want to get this old 1990 on the road with good mods, (this means ebay isn't an option). Im looking for a good MBC, what do you guys usually run? possibly upgrade the stock turbo, 16g? What BOVs do you guys run? i heard DV are better (since i owned an audi), whats your guys take? I also want a good ignition system.. What plugs to run? FMIC? Exhaust? (not ricey)

Sorry for all the question!

Thanks,
Alex

All the local shops sell good manual boost controllers for under $50, otherwise check out the Joe P. at www.boostcontroller.com

Any variety of the 16G is a cheap and effective street turbo that needs minimal supporting mods.

Nothing wrong with the stock 1G BOV, "crush" it to hold a few extra pounds of boost (make sure you keep it routed back into the intake pipe).

The stock 1G ingition system is plenty strong, get some NGK BPR7ES plugs and gap them to .030". A good performance set of wires is also a good idea.

Plenty of FMIC and exhaust options out there; search around the vendors, classifieds, forums, etc. to see whats all available.

Welcome to the board! Chris covered most of it pretty good. I would keep the stock turbo, it is good for 12's on a full weight car pretty easily. Toss up a few pics so we can see if it has any mods already. Get some nice plug wires, K&N filter and one of the MBC's that Chris recommended. Just that should get you low 14's/high 13's, then do the exhaust, FMIC & SAFC and you should be low 13's.

The rumor about the headgaskets is totally untrue, they hold boost great. Grinding trannies on the other hand.... :P

Does it have any mods? Any idea what clutch is in it?

Yes! A convert maybe? Think about this, all of the Audi/VW guys want the HUGE K04 upgrade on their cars...the stock turbo on your car is a 14b, and it is bigger than a K04 :D Welcome to the world of REAL power!

Go for a full exhaust (buschur, or possibly a custom local job)...and when we say exhaust here, we are referring to EVERYTHING from the turbo back to the very rear of the car, not the very back 5' of piping :D.....anyways, walbro fuel pump, and a MBC @18-20psi should get you started (and be faster than your A4 ever dreamed of being!).

No the car is completely stock on the fresh rebuild, the body is in ruff shape, but can be easly fixed since i have experience doing so.

All the car needs is a first gear hub sleeve, does anyone know how much this will be, and labor?? does the tranny have to come off?

pictures of the car can be seen here

as you can see i have alot of work on my hands, but plenty of time

thanks

I hope you won't be "drifting" that 1g because it will drift into curbs... that's the last thing a 1g can do. Welcome aboard.

Is a FMIC, Fuel pump, and MBC enough for me to run 18-20psi safely???

I had a magnaflow setup on the audi, i liked it, plus i get deals if anyone is interested where you pay no shipping and 3/4 the price on brand new magnaflow mufflers www.performancepeddler.com

Yea, you should be able to run ~18 on the stock SMIC and a fuel pump. Exhaust and a FMIC and you'll be able to run ~20. On the stock fuel pump, most people advise against running over 14-15psi. For more power, throw in a S-AFC and bring it to a local tuner (check out our sponsors). Throw it on the dyno and see how things sit. After that, a 2G MAS and some bigger injectors and you'll be set for a bigger turbo!

Nice pick up. And welcome to the site. Searching before you ask questions is must =) Your engine bay looks a little rusty. Good luck with your project.
