So i was in class this morning taking notes on my laptop as i do every tuesday and thursday, well today i noticed that my computer was running a little slow, i check to see if AVG was doing some kind of scan and it was, so i stopped it.
Well bad move, my computer started flickering and it wouldn't stop, it kept trying to shut off the screen, so i would touch the mouse pad and it would try to come back on, but it would go right off again.
So i tried to restart the laptop all kinds of ways and still no luck, the screen will not turn on at all, i have tried restarting it with the restore disk inside and nothing, please help. :scared:

If it will not post (bios) at all, it's probably a hardware problem. If it will boot into windows, or attempt to and fail, then there is more to do. Please post more specific info about what happens when you turn it on.
Also, start by unplugging it and taking out the battery completely for about 30 seconds. Then put them back in & turn on, see what happens.
Any weird noises?

if you hold a light to the screen can you see stuff on the screen? It could be (as Scheides said) a hardware problem, more specifically if you can see stuff and the screen is dark, the inverter for your backlight. I've seen plenty of these go out on laptops, you can usually find the replacement parts cheap on ebay or 3rd party sites if that's what it ends up being.
What kind of lappy is it?

Sorry folks, this kind of gives you an insight of how knowledgeable i am about computers.
The laptop is a Compaq X1000US. dual 256mb ram(so 512mb), 40gb HD. Intel centrino 1.6 ghz.
Ok, when i turn on the laptop, it powers up to a blank screen, i tried a number of times tonight with diff. disks inside it to start it up, but no luck.
It turns on, but the screen doesn't turn on, we got it to flicker on, but no display (the backlight was on, but no display of windows or anything).
I will mess with it more tomorrow and do all of your suggestions.
thank you all.

My screen does that every once and awhile. I can still see a shadow of whatever should be on the screen, but I can't make out anything. I use this to fix it:

Kidding. I just reposition the screen and it works fine. I find that if I press down the screen towards the keyboard, it'll light up. The further back I position it, the more frequent it happens.

To me it sounds like the inverter on both of your lappys is shot. Also another common problem...yes I am dealing with this one. Is the DC Jack on them. My wifes Compaq R3000 has this problem. I just have not found a cheap DC Jack for it yet. The cheapest I found was 8 dollars.... And yes do search Ebay. Let me find a guy on there that I have bought stuff from. And he does carry inverters and new LCD screens and also AC bricks and new batterys.
Here is the guys name on Ebay: born-2-vin Good luck finding out your problem.

well JDM john fixed it up, i brought it in to work today and we figured out that it was a loose connection. So we took the thing apart and now it works.
Thank you all for your help, i willl actually starting a new thread considering my desktop.
Thanks again.

Could of been the ribben that connects to the LCD screen. Another common problem that was fixed by taking it apart. hahaha Great that it works now only if this DC Jack was just lose but ... soldering it could fix it. Just need to buy solder for that.
