Well i removed the crank out of my '99 tonight. Every single bearning and crank journal looked great except for #1. It wasn't the whole bearing either. It was just the half that sits in the cradle. The crank has a very slight bump about the same width as the copper colored part you see in the pics. You can't really feel it with your finger tip. You have to use a fingernail. AND... it's not the whole circumference of the crank journal either. It's just the half of the journal where the piston would be at TDC.

Dam... i wasn't really wanting to get this crank turned. I talked to someone tonight about it. They didn't see it in person but they said they sometimes you can clean up a journals with a really fine grade of emery cloth and a rope and spin it in the lathe. If so, I can have my brother do that at the shop.

Let me know what you think. Motor is close to 100k miles.

Thanks.

Your pictures aren't focused on the bearing. Rather, it's focusing on the background objects.

Ya, it's just a camera phone. It's the only digital camera I got.

Machine shop is going to take .010" off crank journals. Only way to do things is the right way.

It really depends. Problem is that most people re-nitride the crank, which is spendy. I would definitely try the emery cloth option first, it does work well on most surface irregularities.

I will call the machine shop up about the re-nitrate to see if it's offered. Is this process similar to chroming a surface?

Most shops send cranks down to crankshaft supply in NE Minneapolis, they offer re-nitriding. It's about $200 over machining though. Mine was about $320 to have cut and nitrided. If I were doing a street only car, I don't know if I'd re-nitride the crank even though the factory nitriding would be gone. A lot of hi-po factory motors didn't ever come with it.

Hi Steve- As a matter of fact I just got off the phone with my speed shop. The crank is cut locally and they send it to a place in the cities. It's probably the same place you're talking about. He's going to call and get the price. He guess-timated $160-180. If it's the same place, then my machinist estimated way low. If it were only $160, then I might do it. Over $200 is getting too much because it's another $60 for the cutting yet.

I like the fact that you didn't just come right out and say, Get it Nitrated! I hit my goal last October. I'm not sure how much I'm gonna wind the piss out of it anyways this summer. Looks like driving a car period this summer is going to be a privledge with fuel going up.
