Not in order, and different cars:
1)Tranny locked up when driving due to pin breakin off in front diff, caught in ring gear, punched a hole in case dumping all fluid and snapped off the intermediate shaft with one of the big 36mm nuts, exploded clutch disk
2) broke shift fork, stuck in 4th gear, ruined clutch, and nearly died going through all the redlights/stop signs
3) after k sport install, rubber brake line came loose and got severed... almost died when trying to stop at a red light.
4)using a shitty $500 Snap-On CORDLESS impact (w/fully charged battery), I made the mistake of using it to torque my rear wheels... Hours later the rear of the car started to wobble and sway... all rear lugs were about to fall off

Lets see, for the couple months I have owned my 1g, I have only had a couple problems.
BOV venter to atmosphere, fixed it
Wastegate actuator started going, resulting in too much boost, resulting in knock, resulting in blue smoke when I revved it.
clutch going bad, adjusted pedal out so I wouldn't trash the tranny
Went out after school to start it up, luckily I held on the brake. Clutch wasn't disengaging.
So, now I wait for the funds to rebuild it.

I am not saying don't try stuff.
But a lot of people try to work on their cars and bad things happen.
Oh yeah, i have researched and worked on my own car, at times with limited tools (i used to only have a 2** piece tool set, now its less) i would honestly say that if you can do it yourself it not only saves you money, but the satisfaction is bomb too.
I also agree with you on the whole trust issue and vehicle history thing.
Also realize people that these cars are a little old and a little touchy, so keeping a sharp eye on these things is key.
My DSMs,
seperated a harmonic balancer,
fuel pump gave out,
heater hose cracked,
ebrake quit working,
my power windows don't work (gonna fix soon) and i have no heat (also gonna fix soon).

3 weeks after I got my first DSM the front balance shaft locked up taking out the timing belt with it, starving the engine of oil, siezing a bearing, breaking the rod, and took some chunks out of the block, and bending a few valves. When the engine siezed, it also caused the tranny to grenade it's self. Just picked up my second DSM 3 days ago, and fixed a torn vaccuum line, and still have another boost leak somewhere.

Fuel pump
Various sensors
Headgasket
Blown T3/T4
Hole in radiator
Clutch
Transmission - 4 years ago, believe it was syncros
Steering rack
Clutch master cylinder
Ebrake cable snapped
Shifting assembly broke off
Driver front spring snapped - puncturing the tire as well
Bent rim - I never hit a curb
And the two that pissed me off the most:
Driverside lock - wouldn't open unless I wiggled the key around for a few minutes
Fuel door - springs rusted and broke, too lazy to get new springs so I used something to prop the lever up while I walked around to pry the door open, sometimes the object would slip out and I'd have to walk around to do it again

Lets see.... I bought this car from Steve over last spring break with a blown head gasket. Heres what I have had go south so far.
-18 valves (skipped timing belt, then the fuckin machinist didnt replace two when I brought it to him so I had to pull the head again to do those two)
-fried clutch, launched too hard
-oil pump shit the bed (and the previous owner or who ever worked on it before cobble fucked up the connector to the oil pressure sensor so I had no idea until it was too late) which in turn took the rod bearing. So now the crank is undoubtably all fucked up along with the block, and due to how rediculously decked my head was, the piston(s) was slapping on the head so that is probably done too.
Yeah, thats my DSM story. I have a complete good engine waiting for a rebuild now, that will be coming probably middle of May.

haha my roomates don't understand DSM's and they asked "how come so many people responded when you posted about broken cars" ---I thought it was funny
-and today I lost another coolant hose, and that was a damn mess all over the bay, so many tight areas I can get wrench room in, or finger room for that matter
